Otto Kässi

Dr Otto Kässi is Research Fellow at the Department of Computer Science, Aalto University, and Senior Researcher at Etla Economic Research Institute, Finland. He is an economist whose research examines how digital technologies reshape labour markets, firm organisation, industrial policy, and digital sovereignty. His current work focuses in particular on digital sovereignty and the role of public digital infrastructure in supporting productivity growth, innovation, and economic resilience. He has previously held research positions at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, and at the University of Helsinki.

Dr Kässi’s research is published in academic outlets such as the Journal of Management, Journal of Human Resources, Industrial & Corporate Change, and Information, Communication & Society. His research has been covered by The Economist, The Guardian, CBC, and other international outlets. He is a winner of the University of Oxford’s OxTalent Information Visualization Prize, a recipient of the OECD’s Future of Work Fellowship, and an awardee of the title of Docent of Economics from the University of Helsinki.

Dr Kässi is a frequent keynote speaker and has advised the European Commission, the OECD, and member state governments on the implications of digitalisation and AI for economic development, tax bases, industrial policy, and digital governance. He has also delivered executive education to startups and multinational enterprises in the United Kingdom and Finland. Before his academic career, Dr Kässi worked as a data scientist and executive in a Finnish digital startup. He holds a M.Soc.Sc. and D.Soc.Sc. in Economics from the University of Helsinki.
