Philipp Riederle and Kaarlo Liukkonen, members of the DIESL, recently participated in the annual conference of The Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics (SASE), held this year in Montreal. Philipp presented two working papers: “Why is computation centralising? An economic model based on 50 years of data” co-authored with Vili Lehdonvirta, and “User Switching within Interoperable Digital Platforms – A Force for Decentralisation?” Kaarlo presented a working paper “Competing Clouds – was the geoeconomic turn real?” co-authored with Vili Lehdonvirta and Fabian Stephany.
In addition to presenting their research, Kaarlo and Philipp also each moderated a panel discussion. Philipp led discussion on “Value, power and competition”, and Kaarlo moderated panel on “Geopolitics and sovereignty”.
Overall, the conference was very fruitful for Philipp and Kaarlo. The seminar enabled them to meet and interact with brilliant scholars from a variety of universities. To conclude their Montreal trip, Philipp and Kaarlo took time to reflect on their insights and learnings from the conference during some hikes in Québec’s countryside.
